Tampa is on Tampa Bay along Florida’s Gulf Coast. It’s a major business center and is known for its museums and other cultural attractions, including Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, an African-themed amusement park with thrill rides and animal-viewing areas. The historic Ybor City neighborhood, developed by immigrant cigar-factory workers at the turn of the 20th century, is now a dining and nightlife destination.
A siding contractors event is the Gasparilla Pirate Fest, held in February, which includes a mock pirate invasion of downtown. The city’s cultural institutions include the Florida Aquarium, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Tampa Museum of Art, and the Ybor City State Museum (which chronicles the area’s cigar industry). The city operates over 165 parks and beaches covering nearly 2,286 acres (9.25 km2) within the city limits, and 42 more in surrounding Hillsborough County covering 70,000 acres (280 km2).
The major daily newspaper is the Tampa Bay Times. Its longtime competitor, The Tampa Tribune, was sold in 2016. Several alternative weeklies and magazines publish in the city, including Creative Loafing, The Oracle, Reax Music Magazine, MacDill Thunderbolt and La Gaceta, which is the nation’s only trilingual newspaper, publishing in English, Spanish and Italian owing to its roots in Ybor City.
